Uses and Purpose of 420 Stainless Steel Sheets

The martensitic stainless steel 420 has 12% chromium, which is enough to provide good corrosion resistance qualities. For  420 stainless steel sheets to be categorized as high-carbon steel, there must be a minimum of 12% chromium content. The use of these SS 420 sheets is common in the chemical and petrochemical industry. UNS S42000, often known as, has the maximum hardness of all the stainless steel grades with 12 percent chromium (50 HRC). Since martensitic grades are noted for their high hardness, considerations for poor weldability and, often, a final harden and temper treatment, must also be taken into account. Due to steel's magnetic properties, welding is not advised.

For ASTM A276 SS 420 sheets, we also accept special orders. 420 stainless steel sheets typically come from Shree Venktesh Wires and Steels Pvt Limited hardened and tempered in the tensile range 700-850 Mpa (condition R) Brinell range 201-255, or range in the tensile range 770-930 Mpa (condition S). The SS UNS S42000 sheets/sheets have higher corrosion and great oxidation resistance since they are made with the finest quality alloys. The ASTM A276 SS 420 sheets are made of high-carbon steel and must contain a minimum of 12% chromium.

Similar to other grades of sheets, heat treatment can harden SS 420 sheets. The ductility and corrosion resistance of the SS UNS S42000 sheets are improved by procedures like annealing and polishing. The sheets are resistant to corrosion against the atmosphere, foods, fresh water, mild alkalies and acids, steam, sterilizing solutions, crude oil, and gasoline. Among grades of a similar kind, these sheets give the greatest toughness. The  420 stainless steel sheets can be toughened to a maximum of 50 RHC. The weldability of the ASTM A276 SS 420 sheets is constrained by these hardening characteristics.

How to choose

420 stainless steel sheets are widely used in various industrial applications due to their high strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the right stainless steel 420 sheets for your application:

  1. Corrosion resistance: 420 stainless steel sheets are known for their excellent corrosion resistance. However, depending on the operating environment, certain types of corrosion may be more prevalent. For example, chloride-induced pitting corrosion is common in marine environments. Consider the specific corrosion resistance properties of the stainless steel 420 sheets you are considering to ensure they are suitable for your application.
  1. Mechanical properties: The mechanical properties of 420 stainless steel sheets, such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation, can vary depending on the manufacturing process and composition. Consider the mechanical properties required for your application and choose stainless steel 420 sheets that meet those requirements.
  1. Fabrication requirements: 420 stainless steel sheets can be easily formed, welded, and machined. However, the specific fabrication techniques required may vary depending on the shape and size of the sheets. Consider the fabrication requirements for your application and choose stainless steel 420 sheets that are easy to work with and require minimal post-processing.
  1. Cost: The cost of stainless steel 420 sheets can vary depending on the supplier and quantity ordered. Consider your budget and choose stainless steel 420 sheets that offer the best value for your money.
  1. Supplier reputation: Choose a reputable supplier like Shree Venktesh Stainless India that offers high-quality stainless steel 420 sheets and has a proven track record of delivering products on time and with excellent customer service.
